William H. Long Sr. Mr. William H. Long, Jr., age 91, of Bear, DE, passed away on Monday, June 27, 2011. Mr. Long was born on January 22, 1920, son of late William H. Long, Sr. and Nora Josephine Fix, and was raised in Covington, VA. He proudly served his country in the US Army in Battery D of the 249th Coast Artillery during World War II from 1940 to 1943. In civilian life, he made his career with Delmarva Power, where he retired as a supervisor of operations in 1983 after 32 years of service. A devout Christian from his youth, Mr. Long was a past member of the First Presbyterian Church of Covington, First and Central Presbyterian in Wilmington and Faith City Family Church in Christiana. He was currently an active member of Pleasantville Baptist Church in New Castle. A man of many skills, Mr. Long was gifted in all types of construction. From carpentry to masonry to plumbing to electrical work and beyond, there was nothing he couldn’t design beautifully and build perfectly. All family home improvement projects born the distinctive marks of his expert guidance and wisdom. Always a patient and generous teacher, he was happy to share his lifetime of building experience with anyone who sought his advice. Most of all, Mr. Long will be remembered as a devoted husband and father who worked hard throughout his life to provide for his beloved family. He delighted especially in caring for his precious granddaughters and later, his great grandchildren, whom he adored. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Virginia Johnston Long, in 1998, and by four brothers and sisters. He is survived by his son, William H. Long, III (Joanne) of Bear; brother, Gene Long of Newport News, VA; sister, Mary Elizabeth Ellis of Raleigh, NC; granddaughters, Alice Blodgett (Donald, Jr.) of Smyrna, Virginia Allen (Gordon) of Townsend, and Christina Williams (Roger) of Bear; and great grandchildren, Alexandra Allen, Donny Blodgett, III, Gordon Allen, Emily Blodgett, and Erin Blodgett. A memorial service will held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, August 8, 2011, in Cedar Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Jamie B. Pharr officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Pleasantville Baptist Church, 162 Christiana Road, New Castle, DE 19720.
