Melvin Fleshman

                Mr. Melvin M. Fleshman, Sr., age 94, formerly of Midland Trail, died Sunday, October 25, 2009, at the Virginia Care Center, Roanoke.  He was the husband of the late Carol Spellman Fleshman.

                Mr. Fleshman was born February 9, 1915 in Covington, the son of the late Samuel Young Fleshman and Bessie Mae Ballard Fleshman.  A lifetime resident of this community, he served his country as a member of the United States Navy during WW II where he was stationed in the Pacific Theatre of Operations and was a member of the Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars.  Mr. Fleshman was employed as an electrician by Westvaco for forty years, retiring in 1977.  He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church.

                Mr. Fleshman is survived by a son, Melvin M. Fleshman, Jr.; two daughters, Kimberly Fleshman Hensley and husband, Brent, Carolyn Fleshman Young and husband, Guy; eight grandchildren, Triston Hensley, Chris Young, Scott Young, Billy Fleshman, Michael Fleshman, Sheri Carmara, Julie Seate and Devan Hamden; several great grandchildren; a sister, Phyllis Fleshman Crawford and husband, Archie of Covington; a father-in-law, Sidney Spellman; and a number of nieces and nephews.

                In addition to his parents, Samuel Young Fleshman and Bessie Mae Ballard Fleshman and his wife, Carol Spellman Fleshman, Mr. Fleshman was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Tingler Fleshman; a daughter, Delores Fleshman Hamden; two brothers, Elmo Fleshman, Marty Fleshman; three sisters Nora Fleshman, Rose Fleshman, Virginia Fleshman.

                A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, October 29, 2009 from the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Gilliland officiating.  Interment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park.

                Graveside rites will be conducted by Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

                The family will receive friends on Thursday afternoon from 12:30 P.M. until service time at Loving Funeral Home.

                The family will be at the residence of Sidney Spellman, 1801 Midland Trail, Covington, at other times.
