Mark SmithMr. Mark Hatton Smith, Jr., age 83, of 3047 Wildwood Drive, Covington, died Sunday, February 6, 2011, at the Woodlands Nursing Home, Clifton Forge. He was the husband of Barbara Gorman Smith. Mr. Smith was born August 9, 1927 in Clifton Forge, the son of the late Mark Hatton Smith, Sr. and Rosabelle Wilhelm Smith. A graduate of Clifton Forge High School, he attended Smithdale Business College for two years and graduated from the St. Helena Extension of William & Mary. Mr. Smith served his country as a member of the United States Army during World War II where he was a Master Sergeant with the Military Police. He was a manager with the former Ritter Finance and retired from J.P. Morgan Chase Bank as an internal auditor. Mr. Smith was a member of South Covington United Methodist Church where he served his church as an auditor and a trustee. He enjoyed scouting and was a former Scout Master with Troop 26 Boy Scouts of America and Cub Master for Troop # 26. He was a past president of the Covington Lions Club and served on the board of Directors of the Charles P. Jones Memorial Library for nineteen years, seventeen of which he served as treasurer. In addition to his wife of fifty-six years, Barbara Gorman Smith, Mr. Smith is survived by a son, M. Kyle Smith of Culpeper, VA; three grandchildren who affectionately referred to him as paw paw, Jessica Marie Watts, Kathryn Elizabeth Smith, Nicholas Mark Smith; one great grandchild, Hailey Marie Watts; and a number of nieces and nephews including one special nephew, James “Doody” Morris. In addition to his parents, Mark Hatton Smith, Sr. and Rosabelle Wilhelm Smith, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Barbara Diane Smith; two sisters, Almeda Morris, Margarite DePriest; and one nephew, Sherman Wayne Smith. A Celebration of Life service will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, February 9, 2011, at South Covington United Methodist Church with the Rev. Faith Weedling officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Gene Lee, Larry Schoppmeyer, Norman Martin, Nicholas Smith, Chad Watts and Jared Carpenter. Honorary pallbearers will be Shorty Dobson, Buck Rupp, Eddie Austin and James “Doody” Morris. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at Loving Funeral Home.
