Lisa McCoigMiss Lisa Marianna McCoig, age 26, of Chapel Hill, NC, formerly of Covington, died Saturday, February 6, 2010, at her residence. Miss. McCoig was born October 30, 1983 in Atlanta, GA, the daughter of Dr. James A. McCoig and Mary Degli Umberti McCoig. A 2001 graduate of Alleghany High School, she was a member of the National Honors Society, attended Virginia Governor’s School, and played the trumpet in the school band. Lisa graduated from Virginia Tech in 2005 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology then worked for two years at the University of Massachusetts as a Research Associate before being accepted into the Masters/PhD program for molecular physiology. In addition to her parents, Dr. James A. McCoig and Mary Degli Umberti McCoig, Miss. McCoig is survived by a brother, Ian McCoig; two sisters, Nicole McCoig of San Francisco, CA, Emma McCoig; her paternal grandfather, Forrest McCoig of Newport News; three aunts, Anna Degli Umberti of Charlottesville, Amy Schmitz and husband, Robert of Tampa, FL, Laura Ackerman of Hampton; and a host of cousins. Miss. McCoig was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Mary Sabatino and Fred Degli Umberti; paternal grandmother, Katherine McCoig. Lisa had an amazing passion for life, an unforgettable smile, and a love of music. She loved cycling, never turned down a challenge of a good game, loved to share movies and books that were special to her, and filled every moment of her day with an enthusiasm that was inescapable. She carried with her an infectious energy that caused everyone she encountered to gravitate toward her. Lisa had a relentless sense of humor and an unyielding optimistic attitude that uplifted everyone around her even through the most difficult of times. Lisa’s passing will leave those of us who knew her with an irreparable emptiness. A memorial service will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Thursday, February 11, 2010, from the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with Dr. Gary L. Pillow officiating.
