 Jim Hawkins Jr.

                Mr. Jesse James “Jim” Hawkins, Jr., age 81, of 1413 Bennettown Road, died Tuesday, November 16, 2010, at Lewis Gale Alleghany, Low Moor, VA. 

                Mr. Hawkins was born May 2, 1929 in Alleghany County, the son of the late Jesse James Hawkins, Sr. and Dorothy Knighton Hawkins Weikel.   Mr. Hawkins served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corp during the Korean War era.

He was employed by Westvaco Corporation for thirty-three years until his retirement in 1989 as a Quality Control Coordinator. 

A gifted athlete, he was a four sport letterman during his school years, played for the Westvaco  Industrial League, the Rayon Premieres and the Hot Springs Indians, and later had a contract to play semi-pro baseball with the Yankees.  An avid golfer, Mr. Hawkins was a club champion at the Alleghany Country Club and the Westvaco Golf Champion all in the same year.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and bred champion Bluetick hounds.

                Mr. Hawkins is survived by two sons, James G. Hawkins of Covington and Gary W. Hawkins of Covington; two daughters, Deidre H. Massey of Covington and Lisa K. Hawkins of Bedford County; three grandchildren, Melissa Martin, Danielle Hawkins, and Deena Hawkins; one great grandson, Elijah Hairston; two sisters-in-law, Kitty Andrews Hawkins of Halifax and Judy Signorella Hawkins of Nelson County; the mother of his children, Wynona W. Crush; and a number of nieces and nephews.

                In addition to his parents, Jesse James Hawkins, Sr. and Dorothy Knighton Hawkins Weikel, Mr. Hawkins was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert W. “Bob” Hawkins and David G. Hawkins and by loyal canine companion, Huggy Bear.

                A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, November 20, 2010, from the chapel of Loving Funeral Home.  Interment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park.

                The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 7:00 P.M. until 8:30 P.M. at Loving Funeral Home.

                Pallbearers will be Robert “Bobby” Hawkins, Jr., David Hawkins, Adam Hawkins, Charlie Wingfield, Leo Carpenter, David McCormack, Jerry Judy, and Charlie Vice.

                Honorary pallbearers are Dale Hawkins and Andy Morris.
