Gene Ernest Vess, 72, of 6530 Greenway Dr., Roanoke, died Friday, March 26, 2010, at Lewis-Gale Medical Center.

He was born Aug, 7, 1937, in Covington, the son of the late Jesse Wilson Vess and Alberta Karnes Vess.

Mr. Vess was a former employee of Hercules Inc. and H.O. Canfield. He moved to Newport News and worked in the shipping department at Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock until his retirement in 2000. Mr. Vess was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by one son, Kevin Gene Vess and fiance Felicia Otzenberger of Barboursville, W.Va.; Kevin's mother, Marcy Turley of West Hamlin, W.Va; two sisters, Elizabeth Fultz of Front Royal and Joan Vess of Covington. He is also survived by five nieces and four nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Vess was proceded in death by two sisters, Kathleen Keaton and Margaret Sue Marlin; and one brother, Jesse W. Vess Jr.

A graveside service will be conducted Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Covington, with the Rev.Chris Poluikis officiating.

The family will receive friends Tuesday at Loving Funeral Home from 11 a.m. until the service time.
