 Charles Horn               

Charles Lee Horn, Sr., age 79, of 125 East Phillip Street, Covington, went to be with his Lord and family on May 1, 2011.  He was the husband of the late Barbara Kessinger Horn.

Charles was born the son of John Henry Horn and Margaret Brown Horn September 28, 1931 in Covington. He was a graduate of Covington High School in the Class of 1949. He was a veteran of the US Navy serving his country during the Korean Conflict as an aviation machinist and was stationed at the Navel Air Test Center, Pax River, MD.  His first assignment was plane captain of Grumman F4U Corsair Fighter Plane. His last assignment was to the USS Kula Air Craft Carrier CVE 108 and was at sea for 6 months. He finished his military career at the Norfolk Air Station and was responsible for the maintenance of the Captain’s twin engine Beechcraft and was honorably discharged in March of 1955. 

Mr. Horn was a former scout master at Mallow Presbyterian Church and was active in scouting for 47 years. He has three Eagle scouts in his family and helped 29 young men become Eagle scouts. Charlie was presented the Scouting Award of Merit by the Stonewall Jackson Area Council and was a member of the Order of the Arrow.

He was a past vice president of the Covington/Alleghany County Chapter of the Izaak Walton League and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also enjoyed riding motorcycles and trail bikes, gardening and woodworking. Mr. Horn was a member of the Larue Hunt Club in Bath County for 53 years and was president of the club for 33 years.  He enjoyed photography.

Mr. Horn loved and praised his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and was a member of Edgemont Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church and served his church as a former deacon, elder and clerk of the session. 

He retired from Westvaco, Inc. in 1994, after 43 years service working in the Research Laboratory, the last 33 years he was the technician and maintenance supervisor.

He is survived by one daughter, Julie Ann Craun and husband, Bill of Charlottesville; three sons, Charles Lee Horn, Jr. and wife, Amy of Chester, VA, Jeffrey Stuart Horn and wife, Robbie and David Scott Horn and wife, Tammy, both of Covington; eight grandchildren, Dr. Jonathan Craun, Sarah Craun, Ryan Horn, Adam Horn, Jennifer Horn Lodge and husband, Matthew, Neil Horn, Josh Horn and Emily Horn; his best friend and companion, Beverly Barnett.

In addition to his parents and loving wife of 43 years, Barbara Kessinger ‘Barbie Doll’ Horn, he was preceded in death by one brother, John Henry Horn, Jr.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, May 5, 2011 at Edgemont Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church with Rev. Donnie Bowker officiating. Interment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park.

The active pallbearers will be Bill Keyser, Mike Michie, Michael Tennant, Jim Crawford, Andy Howell, Randall Barnett, Ronnie Barnett and Ricky Barnett.

           Honorary pallbearers will be Eddie Austin, Rev. Ed Nicholson, Larry Snead, Bill Thurston, Bert Seay, Mary Frances Mays Davis and Temple Kessinger, Jr.  

           Graveside rites will be conducted by Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M. at Loving Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence of David and Tammy Horn, 300 Sammy’s Rd.
