Mr. Billy Nickell Gum, age 81, of 1610 Valley Ridge Road, died Thursday, November 18, 2010, at his residence. He was the husband of the late Betty Loan Gum. Mr. Gum was born November 20, 1928 in Cornstalk, WV, the son of the late Warwick Oliver Gum and Mary Phillips Gum. He served his country as a member of the United States Navy during World War II and was a member of Covington American Legion Post 4. A member of this community since 1948, he was employed as a welder for MeadWestvaco Inc for forty-three years and was very active in the paper mill unions and inducted into the Union Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge #23 and attended Mallow Presbyterian Church. Mr. Gum enrolled in the Covington Moose Lodge on June 24, 1958 and became a member of Moose Legion 82 in 1961. He received his fellowship degree in 1964 and then went on to earn and receive his pilgrim degree in 1978. Billy held every position on the Board of Officers, served in every committee and was a past governor at the Covington Moose Lodge, a past president of District 7 and past president of Moose Legion 82. He was very knowledgeable about the Moose organization. Billy enjoyed helping people and often volunteered to deliver meals on wheels. Mr. Gum is survived by two sons, Gary D. Gumm and companion Peggy Sparks of Covington and Gregary A. Gum of Clifton Forge; two granddaughters, Nicole G. Bennett and husband, Ron of Covington and Brooke A. Gum and fiancé, Kevin Noguiera of Roanoke; loving and faithful companion of twenty years, Opal Ray; and her three children, Linda and Tom Perry, Pam and Bruce Musser and Jerry and Jessica Ray; three special friends, Dunie Tucker and wife, Gail, Susie Fridley and Ed Nicely; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Warwick Oliver Gum and Mary Phillips Gum, and wife, Betty Loan Gum, Mr. Gum was preceded in death by six brothers, Forest Thomas, Howard Thomas, Ray Gum, Andy Gum, Avery Gum, W.O. Gum, Jr. and one sister, Betty Jewell Gum. A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, November 21, 2010, from the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with the Rev. Gary Marshall officiating, assisted by the Rev. Bill Gilliland. Pilgrim Degree memorial rites will be conducted by area Pilgrim Degree holders The family will receive friends on Sunday afternoon following the service.
