Bernard Smith
Mr. Bernard Elmo Smith, age 85, of 1427 S. Franklin Avenue, died
Sunday, September 27, 2009, at his residence. He was the husband of
Reba Johnson Smith.
Mr. Smith was born October 22, 1923 in Alleghany County,
the son of the late Thomas Smith and Katherine Scott Smith. He served
his country during World War II as a member of the United States Navy on
a LST 2 in the North Atlantic. A lifetime resident of this community,
Mr. Smith was employed as a Tower Foreman in the Pulp Department of
Westvaco, Inc, retiring in 1978 after thirty-seven years of service. He
was a member of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church. Mr. Smith was an
avid hunter and fisherman, and was a member of the Curtis A. Smith Post
1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
In addition to his wife of sixty-two years, Reba Johnson
Smith, Mr. Smith is survived by three daughters, Bonnie S. Kinsey and
husband, Jakie, Sharon S. Schuder and husband, Lawrence, Kathy S. Leitch
and husband, Lewis, all of Covington; five grandchildren, Jamie Worley
of Roanoke, Tom Leitch and wife, Katie of Doylestown, PA, Mark Schuder
and wife, Amy of Covington, Jennifer Leitch of Roanoke, Travis Schuder
of Reynoldsburg, OH; two step grandchildren, Terry Kinsey and wife,
Anne, Ronnie Kinsey and wife, Christie; four great grandchildren, Rachel
Leitch, Eric Leitch, Destiny Schuder and Hope Worley; five step great
grandchildren, Emily Kinsey, Christopher Kinsey, Rachael Kinsey, Mason
Kinsey, Noah Rust.
In addition to his parents, Thomas Smith and Katherine
Scott Smith, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by three brothers, Godfrey
Smith, Alphonso Smith, Bill Smith; one sister, Kathleen Wilfong.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M.
Wednesday, September 30, 2009, from the chapel of Loving Funeral Home
with the Rev. Doug Hollenbeck officiating. Interment will follow in
Alleghany Memorial Park.
Graveside rites will be conducted by Curtis A. Smith
Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews, Jamie Worley,
Tom Leitch, Mark Schuder, Travis Schuder, Donald Smith and Lee Smith.
Alternate pallbearers will be Terry Kinsey and Ronnie Kinsey.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from
7:00 P.M. until 8:30 P.M. at Loving Funeral Home.
